Jerusalem, a city layered with history and time.
And like the city itself, this project carries within it a story that spans over a century-a community whose founders are no longer with us, yet whose legacy continues.
And that was the guiding intention: to reveal the story of the community.
I use the word “reveal” deliberately, as it became the central milestone of the project.
When I first arrived at the synagogue, I immediately understood this would be a unique intervention. The space was neglected and cluttered, with all walls and the Ark covered in successive layers of plaster and paint accumulated over the years.
Together with craftsmen, we carefully peeled back these layers, polishing the space like a diamond until reaching its original essence. The walls were stripped to reveal the authentic stone beneath.
The original wooden ceiling, previously divided asymmetrically into three parts, was replaced with a vaulted ceiling that resonates with the architectural language of the synagogue.
